ONLINE COLLABORATION TOOLS FOR EFFECTIVE TEACHING AND LEARNING

Course purpose and overview

Effective teaching and learning in academic environments increasingly depend on meaningful collaboration (among students, between teachers, and across institutions). Online collaboration tools are not simply technical solutions; they are pedagogical enablers that support active learning, engagement, inclusion, and knowledge co-creation.
The purpose of this course is to help academic staff critically and practically explore a range of online collaboration tools and platforms, and to integrate them effectively into teaching, learning, assessment, and academic teamwork. Rather than focusing only on tools, the course emphasises pedagogical alignment, instructional design, and student engagement.
Participants will explore how digital collaboration tools can support collaborative learning approaches such as group work, peer feedback, project-based learning, blended and online learning, and international collaboration. Through hands-on activities, reflection, and peer exchange, participants will learn how to select, use, and adapt tools to their own academic context.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to design collaborative learning activities using online tools that enhance interaction, participation, and learning outcomes.

Course structure and content

This course focuses on the pedagogical use of online collaboration tools in academic teaching and learning. Participants will explore synchronous and asynchronous collaboration platforms (e.g. shared documents, discussion tools, virtual classrooms, project management tools) and learn how to integrate them into different teaching scenarios.
Participants will also explore strategies for peer assessment, feedback, inclusion, accessibility, and ethical considerations related to online collaboration.
The course combines short theoretical inputs with extensive practical activities, demonstrations, group work, and reflective discussions. Participants will design collaborative learning activities and lesson plans tailored to their disciplines and institutional contexts.
