EDUCATION FOR SUSTAINABILITY: A CRITICAL AND TRANSFORMATIVE APPROACH
Course purpose and overview
This six-day training course aims to support teachers in developing a critical and integrated understanding of sustainability as an educational, ethical and social dimension. Based on the thinking of Enrique Leff, the course addresses sustainability as a response to the contemporary environmental crisis, understood not only as an ecological crisis, but also as a crisis of the dominant model of development and rationality.
The training proposes a transformative educational approach, centred on environmental rationality, dialogue between different fields of knowledge and socio-environmental justice, reinforcing the role of education as a driver of cultural and social change. Throughout the course, participants are invited to reflect critically on the challenges of sustainability and to explore pedagogical strategies that promote active citizenship, social responsibility and the construction of sustainable futures in the educational context.
Course structure and content
The course is structured around six consecutive training days, organised in a progressive manner, allowing participants to deepen their understanding of the concept of sustainability and its application in the educational context. The pedagogical structure combines theoretical framework, critical reflection, case analysis and practical activities, promoting meaningful and action-oriented learning. The first day introduces the fundamentals of sustainability and the contemporary environmental crisis, framing it as a crisis of the development and knowledge model. The second day delves deeper into the concept of environmental rationality proposed by Enrique Leff, exploring the limits of economic and technocratic rationality and the importance of dialogue between different fields of knowledge. The third day focuses on the ethical and social dimensions of sustainability, addressing issues such as environmental justice, human rights, cultural identity, and social responsibility. The fourth day is dedicated to education for sustainability in practice, exploring interdisciplinary pedagogical approaches, participatory methodologies, and the integration of sustainability into school curricula and dynamics. The fifth day focuses on the role of the teacher as an agent of social transformation, promoting reflection on educational leadership, collective action and community involvement, culminating in the development of an educational action plan for sustainability and the transfer of learning into professional practice.
